ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ has launched a comprehensive report, independently authored by Anthesis Group and commissioned by ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ, charting a science-based pathway for the EU food and drink sector to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The report presents the first lifecycle-based assessment of the sector’s emissions across all three scopes, identifying the biggest emission drivers – from fertiliser production and agricultural practices to energy use in processing- and modelling 18 high-impact decarbonisation interventions. Through a selection of these interventions, the report demonstrates that an 85% reduction in overall baseline emissions is achievable by 2050, exceeding the Science Based Targets Initiative Net Zero standard.
Crucially, the report goes beyond technical solutions to outline an actionable policy framework across four pillars:
- Transforming agricultural land use and inputs
- Decarbonising agricultural production
- Greening the fertiliser industry
- Accelerating the clean energy transition in food processing.
It provides specific, evidence-based recommendations for EU policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to unlock the investment, innovation, and systemic change required for the sector’s decarbonisation.
A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the pathway to sustainability in Europe’s largest manufacturing sector.
