Nomad Foods Sugar Reduction in Ice Creams

Nomad Foods Ledo and Frikom brands are the largest producers of ice cream in the Adriatic region. In line with their purpose to make mealtimes better with the goodness of frozen food, their mission is for ice cream portfolio to represent responsible treats that are part of a healthy diet if consumed occasionally and in moderation.

Approach

To achieve an ice cream portfolio comprising responsible treats, Nomad Foods have a tailored nutrition approach, segmenting ice cream portfolio based on format and consumer group, and focusing on Responsible Per Portion Guidelines (RPPG). RPPG considers portion size and the maximum responsible levels of calories, saturated fat and sugar, in accordance with national guidelines and global nutrition standards, to guide responsible ice cream development.

As part of their approach to nutrition for ice cream, their expert Nutrition team developed ‘Created for Kids’ nutrition guardrails. To be compliant with these, a product must provide maximum 110 kcal, 10g sugar and 3.5g saturated fat per serving. They additionally must not contain artificial colours or flavours.

In 2024, Nomad Foods announced their commitment that by end of 2025, 100% of their Kids ice cream portfolio will comply with our Created for Kids nutrition guardrails. As of Q1 2025, one remaining Kids ice cream product – Kontiki Raspberry Mango – remained non-compliant with these nutrition guardrails, and so renovation work was undertaken to ensure a compliant product could be launched by the end of 2025.

Method

Created for Kids nutrition guardrails compliance was achieved through recipe reformulation and sensory testing, with a focus on sugar reduction. Sugar reduction in edible ices is challenging given sugar has a functional role in modulating ice formation and impacting texture, however Nomad Foods team of expert ice cream product developers successfully managed to reduce sugar per portion from 11g to 10g without the addition of artificial additives, a reduction in portion size or an impact on product liking.

Impact

The renovated Kontiki Raspberry Mango Stick now fully complies with our Created for Kids nutrition guardrails, and therefore represents a responsible treat. Longer term, our Created for Kids guardrails have the potential to help reshape the children’s treat market in the Adriatic region, setting a new nutritional benchmark for responsible indulgence.
