NMWE and Pilario LCA tool: supporting environmental footprint measurement in the water sector

Published: 07/04/2026

In October 2024, Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), in partnership with Pilario, launched a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool to help companies in the natural mineral and spring water sector measure and better understand their environmental footprint.

The tool is part of NMWE’s commitment to supporting its members, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in their sustainability efforts by providing accessible and practical solutions for environmental assessment.

Based on EU-recommended Environmental Footprint methods, the tool enables users to assess a wide range of environmental impacts beyond carbon emissions, including water use, resource depletion, land use change, and eutrophication.

Its sector-specific design integrates data from PET and glass supply chains, offering a consistent framework for environmental assessment. The tool also enables benchmarking against anonymised industry averages, helping companies, both SMEs and larger operators, to better understand their performance within the sector.

By improving data consistency and comparability, the tool supports more informed decision-making and contributes to a more coherent approach to measuring environmental performance across the sector.
